IMPORTANT FAFSA UPDATES:

While the 24-25 FAFSA/CADAA application deadline for state aid has passed, students unable to complete the FAFSA/CADAA are still encouraged to file the FAFSA/CADAA as soon as possible for Federal and UCLA aid consideration.

24-25 FAFSA Processing Delays and Aid Offer Update

  • In addition to thousands of aid offers that that have been sent since April 19, 2024 (and continue to be sent) to prospective freshman and graduate students, thousands of new transfer student admits should have received a UCLA aid offer (Provisional Aid Letter, or PAL) since April 29, 2024.
  • For FAFSA filers who have not received a PAL, we encourage you to review UCLA troubleshooting guidance before contacting our office.
  • The Department of Education is now sending electronic FAFSA records to institutions on a daily basis for corrections made by students AND the IRS; please keep in mind that if student aid eligibility changes based on application data changes, prospective students will receive an updated aid offer.
  • Some students may need to submit updates to their FAFSA directly with the Department of Education or submit documentation to UCLA Financial Aid & Scholarships; UCLA continues to notify students with incomplete financial aid file status' via messaging available through the MyUCLA portal.
  • As a reminder, the University of California has extended their Statement of Intent to Register (SIR) commitment deadline for first-year undergraduate students to May 15, 2024 due to FAFSA and aid offer delays. The deadline for Transfer Admits to submit their Statement of Intent to Register (SIR) is June 1st.

California Dream Act Application (CADAA) Processing Delays

  • The State of California Student Aid Commission is now sending CADAA data to UCLA on an ongoing basis, which has allowed UCLA to send aid offers to eligible undocumented students on an ongoing basis.

Mixed-Status Family Guidance

  • A “Mixed-Status family” is a family whose members include individuals with different citizenship or immigration statuses where a family member may not have a social security number (SSN). In the past, parents without an SSN could enter all zeros as an SSN but the process has changed due to changes in the FAFSA process.
  • While UCLA can confirm hundreds of mixed family status students have been able to successfully file the FAFSA and receive an aid offer from UCLA, and more than one hundred students were guided on FAFSA completion last week, we know that hundreds are still experiencing FAFSA filing problems.
  • The Department of Education is aware of issues and posted an update on April 30, 2024 for Mixed-Status student guidance. Official guidance for completing the identity validation process for those without an SSN can be found on StudentAid.gov. If an individual’s StudentAid.gov account does not show a status of “no-SSN” with a green check icon and they have not received an email notifying them of this temporary change, they will need to follow the instructions for individuals without an SSN to create a StudentAid.gov account, as they are not currently in the Department’s system.
  • We recognize the importance of some Mixed-Status students being unable to meet the State of California May 2, 2024 FAFSA filing deadline. UCLA continues to encourage Mixed-Status students to complete the FAFSA, and are committed to facilitating deadline appeals to the California Student Aid Commission. Please check our website often for any new guidance and virtual outreach information and review UCLA guidance already provided.

bruin statue 24/25 FAFSA and CADAA Application NOW OPEN!

The 24/25 FAFSA and CADAA application are now available to complete.

The FAFSA Simplification Act of 2020 allowed for major improvements in the financial aid application process beginning in the 2024/25 academic year.

The Simplified FAFSA will:
1. Expand the access to Federal Financial Aid.
2. Reduce the number of questions asked.
3. Enhance data sharing with the IRS to ease the applicants experience.

The CA Dream Act (CADAA) application has undergone similar major changes and improvements.

The delayed FAFSA and CADAA application launch will only impact the 2024/25 academic year.

 FSA Guidance How To Submit the FAFSA For Contributors Without an SSN

Federal Student Aid (FSA) this month updated its instructions to help students and their contributors without a Social Security number (SSN) successfully submit the 2024-25 FAFSA form. When the 2024-25 FAFSA initially launched, a technical issue prevented contributors without an SSN from starting or accessing the form. FSA states that the issue has been resolved and that the updated instructions are meant to help students and contributors navigate issues that may impact user experience. The updated instructions also address frequently asked questions students may have, including what to do if a student invited a contributor to their FAFSA but they still don't see the form after logging into studentaid.gov, or what to do if a contributor doesn't have a U.S. mailing address.

The UCLA Financial Aid and Scholarships Registered Student Application is open year round.

Each year, a new application cycle will begin in mid-to-late March. Priority consideration for upcoming academic year awards is given to students who submit their general application by June 30th, however the application will remain open beyond June 30th.

With the COVID-19 payment pause coming to an end, borrowers will restart making payments in October 2023. If you are a borrower whose payments were on pause, you will get a notification from your lender, with your payment amount and due date, at least 21 days before the due date.

Make sure to update your information on StudentAid.gov, as well as on your servicer’s website. You can also use the Loan Simulation to compare payment plans, keeping in mind that there is a new Income-Driven Repayment (IDR) Plan.
